Scoring data and video graphics

Turn the scoring desk’s official data into a consistent scoreboard layout.

XL AV establishes the source of score and timing data before selecting the graphics and video control system. A supported connection may use serial data, a network interface, or a manufacturer gateway, depending on the installed console. Required licences, data permissions, and field mapping are confirmed for each sport.

Score, clock, period, fouls, penalties, and team identifiers are mapped into templates with practical text sizes and contrast. Operators can change video content without accidentally obscuring required game information. Lost-data behavior and manual fallback procedures are included in the operating plan.

Wall-mounted and four-sided video scoreboards

Select the display arrangement around the audience, content, and available mounting locations.

A wall-mounted video scoreboard can combine score graphics with team introductions, live pictures, and presentations. Four-sided hanging displays can distribute that content around a seating bowl. The design checks near and far viewing positions, obstructions, score-panel size, and whether each face needs an independent feed.

Hanging assemblies require an engineered structure, approved rigging and lifting arrangements where applicable, and a defined service method. LUXVISION ECOLUX Hanging X is evaluated for suitable flown systems; PROLUX Rugged is evaluated for suitable indoor wall positions with ball exposure. Neither product choice alone establishes approval for a complete suspended assembly.

Perimeter displays and coordinated playback

Extend game presentation to ribbons and scorer’s-table displays with their own content layouts.

A perimeter display has a very different pixel canvas from a main video scoreboard. The system therefore needs appropriate output mapping, content dimensions, and processor capacity. A sponsor cue may trigger coordinated playback across several displays while each output retains its correct layout.

Courtside protection, mounting stability, athlete clearances, and cable protection are resolved for the actual installation. Rinkside boards require a separate assessment of puck exposure and the rink system. Suitable LUXVISION options are confirmed against manufacturer-approved mounting and protection rather than assuming a standard cabinet fits every location.

Shot clocks, game clocks, and horns

Integrate dedicated timing equipment and test it against the graphics shown on screen.

Define the applicable sports rules, shot-clock mounting positions, reset controls, and any required backboard or end-of-period indicators. Existing dedicated clocks may remain in service if their interface and operation are compatible with the project.

The official timing system remains the reference for commissioning. Compare the dedicated clock, scoreboard graphic, and production feed, including any delay through processing. Verify start, stop, resets, overtime, and horn routing with the intended scoring staff. Confirm competition requirements before using a video display as an official timing destination.

Audio integration and intelligible announcements

Coordinate the scoreboard soundtrack, announcer, music, and game signals through the room audio system.

Video audio, announcer microphones, playback devices, and horns are routed through a defined DSP and mixing workflow. Priority settings, maximum levels, and operator controls should support clear announcements without unexpected changes when a new source is selected.

Loudspeaker coverage, feedback mitigation, equalization, and delay alignment are established for the room. Close microphone placement, appropriate loudspeaker aiming, and controlled gain remain important alongside DSP processing. Streaming usually needs a separate mix so remote viewers hear commentary and game sound at useful levels.

Replay, coaching, and live streaming

Use the video system for game presentation and training with defined source permissions.

Cameras, replay tools, presentation computers, and encoders can feed the video scoreboard through a switching system. Practice sessions can show coaching footage, annotated plays, demonstrations, and team presentations. Game mode can preserve scoring while switching between live pictures and highlights.

Recording storage, camera coverage, operator staffing, network capacity, and privacy or consent procedures are addressed in the scope. Streams and local displays may use different layouts. Official video review requires separate authorization and procedures from the competition organizer.

Sponsorship, signage, and facility messaging

Schedule revenue opportunities and day-to-day information without disrupting official scoring.

Define sponsor inventory by display zone, event type, and duration. Teams can prepare approved templates for advertising, recognition, fixture lists, wayfinding, and community information. Playback scheduling and content ownership are assigned to venue staff.

Facility alerts can be considered as an approved override interface with the emergency-management team. The design defines priority, authorized triggers, and recovery to normal operation. An LED scoreboard does not replace required emergency notification equipment. Sponsorship income is assessed against actual sales and content-management costs.

Controls, installation, and acceptance testing

Give staff repeatable operating modes and verify the complete system before handover.

Control presets can establish game, practice, assembly, and presentation modes with the appropriate source routing, display layout, audio levels, and lighting interfaces. User permissions distinguish scoring changes from content playback and system administration.

XL AV coordinates power, data, structure, access, and network requirements. Acceptance tests cover each sport, clock interface, display output, audio destination, and fallback procedure. Operator training, configuration backups, maintenance access, and agreed support responsibilities complete the handover.

Plan the system around the game and the room

A video scoreboard project begins with the sports, official timing requirements, seating, source content, and staff who operate the system. XL AV coordinates the scoring interface, LED display configuration, video processing, audio, and controls, then tests the complete workflow before handover.

Questions

Can an existing scoring console be retained?

Where supported, yes. The console model, data output, firmware, interface requirements, and sport-specific fields are checked before confirming integration.

Does an on-screen clock replace a dedicated shot clock?

That depends on the applicable competition requirements and the approved system. Video graphics can be delayed by processing. Dedicated timing equipment and its official role are confirmed during design.

Can the display be used outside game time?

Yes. Approved modes can support coaching, presentations, announcements, sponsor content, and event production, with controls and permissions defined for staff.
